Do I Need Emergency Dentistry?

Dental emergencies can happen unexpectedly—from sports injuries to slips on ice. If you’re in pain or have visible damage, our emergency dentistry services can help you get immediate care from an experienced emergency dentist in North Vancouver.

A dental emergency includes any issue that needs urgent attention to save a tooth, stop bleeding, or relieve severe pain. Infections or abscesses can be serious and may become life-threatening without prompt treatment.

Call us right away if you have:

  • A toothache that disrupts eating or sleeping
  • A knocked-out tooth
  • Broken or loose braces (contact your orthodontist if applicable)
  • A cracked, chipped, or broken tooth
  • A lost filling or crown
  • An abscess or swelling on the gumline

Our team is here to help restore your comfort and protect your oral health as quickly as possible.

Dental First Aid – What to Do

Dental emergencies can feel overwhelming, especially when it happens suddenly. The most important thing is to stay calm, provide first aid, and seek professional care as soon as possible.

Here’s how to handle common dental emergencies:

Toothache

Apply a cold compress to reduce pain and swelling. You may take over-the-counter pain relief like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil)—just follow dosage instructions carefully. Note the medication, amount, and time taken so you can inform your dentist.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Act quickly. If the tooth is clean and intact, gently place it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, place it in a cup of milk and call us immediately. A knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being saved within 60 minutes.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently remove any fragments. If bleeding occurs, apply sterile gauze. A cold compress can help manage swelling. Contact us right away so we can relieve pain and restore your tooth.

Dental Abscess

An abscess is a serious infection that forms near the tooth root or gums. Left untreated, it can damage surrounding tissue and spread to other parts of the body. Rinse with warm saltwater (½ tsp of salt in 8 oz of water) several times a day to ease pain and draw out pus, but see your dentist as soon as possible.

If you’re unsure about your symptoms or need immediate guidance, contact us. We’re here to help you get the care you need quickly and safely.

Contact us today

to schedule an initial consultation & exam.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Refer to the dental first aid tips above—but your first step should always be to contact us. We’ll provide guidance over the phone to help relieve pain, protect your tooth, and get you into our office as quickly as possible.

If it’s safe for you, over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil), or aspirin may help ease discomfort. Always follow your doctor’s advice and read the label carefully. Keep track of what you took, how much, and when—and let us know when you arrive. Keep in mind, this is only temporary relief; true relief requires professional dental care.

Yes—but hospitals are limited in how they treat dental problems. The Emergency Room (ER) may provide temporary relief or treat the medical aspects of a dental emergency, but they typically can’t offer full dental treatment. You’ll likely still need to see a dentist afterward for follow-up care.

A broken tooth can trap bacteria, leading to infection, abscess, or nerve damage. If left untreated, it may eventually require a root canal or extraction. Prompt treatment can save the tooth and prevent further complications.

If an abscess isn’t treated, the infection can spread to your jaw, head, neck, or even throughout your body—causing sepsis, a life-threatening condition. Even if the abscess ruptures and the pain decreases, urgent dental care is still required.
