Root Canal Treatment (RCT)

Preserving Your Natural Tooth through Root Canal Treatment
During a root canal procedure, the living tissue inside the tooth, known as the pulp, is extracted. The resulting void is then filled with specialized dental materials that have medicinal properties, effectively restoring the tooth's complete functionality. Opting for root canal therapy not only extends the lifespan of your natural tooth, but also safeguards and maintains the health of the jawbone and other supporting tissues surrounding the tooth. Whenever feasible, saving your natural tooth can spare you from future discomfort and financial burden.

Teeth and Gum Care Simplified

There are various signs that indicate the potential need for root canal therapy:

  • Increased sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures: If you experience heightened sensitivity in your tooth when consuming hot or cold foods or beverages, it could be a sign of damage or infection in the tooth's pulp. The pulp contains nerve endings that can become irritated or damaged, leading to sensitivity. ·
  • Intense toothache: Persistent and severe toothache pain is often an indication of an underlying issue such as an infection or inflammation within the tooth's pulp. The pain can be throbbing or sharp and may worsen when you bite down or apply pressure to the affected tooth. ·
  • Inflammation or swelling of the gums around the affected tooth: Inflammation or redness in the gums surrounding a specific tooth can be a sign of infection or inflammation spreading from the tooth's pulp. The body's immune response can cause the gums to become swollen, tender, or even bleed in some cases. ·
  • Tooth discoloration: If a tooth becomes noticeably discoloured, turning darker or appearing greyish, it may indicate that the pulp inside the tooth has been damaged or has died. Discoloration occurs when the blood supply to the tooth is compromised, and the pulp tissue starts to break down.
  • Presence of an abscess (or pimple) on the gums: An abscess is a pocket of pus that forms due to a bacterial infection. If you notice a small pimple-like bump on the gums near a tooth, it could indicate the presence of an abscess. Abscesses can develop because of untreated pulp infection and may cause localized swelling, pain, and even a foul taste or Odor mouth.

Treatment plan

The initial step in your diagnosis and treatment plan involves taking an x-ray of the affected tooth and surrounding bone to identify the underlying cause of your symptoms. To control infection and inflammation, your specialist may prescribe antibiotics. By reducing the inflammation in advance, the pressure from infected swelling, which is often responsible for the pain associated with an abscess, can be alleviated during the root canal procedure.

Preparation of the Tooth
Prior to performing the root canal, we prioritize your comfort and peace of mind. We will ensure that the area is adequately numbed, including your gums, teeth, and surrounding tissues. Once you are comfortable, we will create an access hole in the tooth. The pulp, bacteria, decayed nerve tissue, and any related debris will be carefully removed.

Sealing of the Tooth
Depending on the severity of the abscess, additional medication may be placed inside the tooth to completely clear any infection. If the procedure requires multiple visits, a temporary filling will be applied. At this point, you will likely experience some relief. Only when your tooth is thoroughly cleaned and deemed healthy can it be permanently sealed.

root canal faq
Q1. Why do I need a root canal?

Root canals are necessary when the tooth's pulp becomes infected or inflamed. This can occur due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, a crack or chip in the tooth, or trauma to the tooth.

Q2. How can I tell if I need a root canal?

Some common signs that may indicate the need for a root canal include severe toothache pain, sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, swelling or tenderness in the gums, tooth discoloration, and the presence of a pimple or abscess on the gums.

Q3. Is a root canal a painful procedure?

Modern advancements in dental techniques and anaesthesia have made root canal procedures much more comfortable than in the past. In fact, most patients report feeling relief after the root canal as it eliminates the source of toothache pain.

Q4. How long does a root canal procedure take?
